Common Types of Birth Injuries
Birth injuries can come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of severity. However, here are a few of the more common types of injuries:
Caput Succedaneum: This occurs when the soft tissue of the infant’s scalp swells, often due to use of the vacuum extractor during delivery.
Cephalohematoma: This is characterized by bleeding just outside the bone, which can lead to jaundice when the affected area is extensive.
Cerebral Palsy: Oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery can lead to brain damage. Brain damage that affects muscle function and movement is a defining characteristic of cerebral palsy.
Erb’s Palsy/Brachial Plexus Injury: This condition results from nerves being stretched or torn during delivery, affecting movement in the baby’s arms, hands and fingers.
Facial Paralysis: Too much pressure on the infant’s face (by forceps use or by other means) can tear or bruise facial nerves, causing paralysis. The first sign is often lack of motion on one side of the baby’s face or one eye that will not close.
Forceps Injuries: Improper use of forceps during delivery can easily lead to bruises, tearing and other damage to the infant.
Fractures: Infants born in a breech position have a higher chance of fractures, which often occur in the shoulders, arms, legs or collarbones.
